5Excellent bunk bed
By RSB
Let me start with the warnings. This bunk bed is huge! With the drawers forming the steps, it adds a good two feet in length to a standard bed. And you need to make sure you have access to the storage areas under the drawers (steps) at the end. The dimensions are given so please measure your room(s) to make sure that it will fit. The reason I say this is because we have two bedrooms and while it would have fit in both, it would have absolutely dominated the smaller bedroom. And even in the larger room, it only fit against one wall. So measure first and visualize before ordering. Note that the steps can be put at either end as this may factor in your placement.

The bed is 70" high. For those of you with 8' ceilings, be aware that's only about 2'2" from the top of the bunk to the ceiling. Even a small child will not be able to stand on the top bunk. And the person sleeping in the top bunk will have to crawl into bed. I would therefore suggest that this bunk is for smaller children rather than, say, teenagers who could probably touch the ceiling while lying flat in bed.

That's not to say that it cannot take the weight of a full grown teenager or adult. The bed is made of wood which we really liked. The finish is smooth and even. Once assembled, it is solid and we have not worries about stability even with our 4 year old and some of his friends clambering all over it while playing. We also felt that the steps were much safer than a ladder. The extra storage was a definite bonus.

The bed arrived in 7 or 8 separate boxes which I really appreciated as no individual box weighed more than around 30lb. I've had other furniture delivered in a single box which took two very strong people to lift and move. Here are some things that worked for us that may work for you.

We opened the boxes in the garage and made sure that all the pieces were there. It also meant carrying individual bits of wood was far easier than the entire box. But as I said before, with multiple lighter boxes it still wouldn't be too difficult to carry the boxes up the stairs. Opening the boxes and sorting the pieces took around an hour. As other people have suggested, make sure you have a good electric screwdriver or power drill and make sure they are fully charged - you'll need it for assembly!

We started assembling the bunk beds around noon and they (not drawer/steps section) were ready for use around 1:30PM in time for our son's nap. After nap time, it took another hour to assemble the drawer steps. The drawers themselves are pre-assembled and only had to be fit together. Do not push the beds all the way back before attaching the steps as there are a couple of screws in the back that fix the drawers to the bunk part. Here's where it gets tricky. With all this assembled, the bed is very heavy. I would suggest at least 2 people (preferably 3) to push it into place against the wall. Once it is in place, it's not going anywhere!

The under-the-bed drawers took another 30 minutes to assemble - that's 15 mins each! These drawers are not of the same quality as the rest of the bed, but I cannot down grade this product for just that.

So total unpacking and assembly time for us was about 4 hours. I probably could have shaved some time off if I didn't have "help" from a 4 year old. He had all the storage spaces and drawers filled in time for bed time. Please note that neither my wife nor I are professionals, but I have assembled furniture before and this was one of the easiest. I would highly recommend this bed provided you made sure that it would fit in your intended space. While we don't need another bunk bed, we'd certainly consider getting other furniture from this supplier.

5Overall, very nice... Good for the price
By Lego Fan
EDIT: The below was written right after we built the bed. We bought from Mom's Bunk House, they really are great, small family owned company, took care of us. We had a problem with one of the parts, they got it swapped right out.

Anyway, as for the bed itself, we still love it. Very nice overall. We would buy it again, so no problems there. I will say that it took longer than we expected to build, it was an all afternoon project, it does require two people to do it right, and you need a drill, don't try this with just hand tools. The kids love it, again, very happy

----------------------------------

It is cheap furniture... Don't expect high end stuff here, the whole thing is very cheaply made. Don't get me wrong, it isn't particle board, it really is solid wood in most places, enginered wood in others, not a bit of particle board or plywood in sight. What is cheap is the quality of the pre-drilled holes, the quality of the finish, the fit of the parts, all was pretty average at best.

Still, for $865 delivered for a bunk bed, stairs, and drawers under, it is a fair deal.

The big test, would we buy it again? Yes, we would. For all my griping over the average construction quality, this is going to our kids, who won't be all that nice to it anyway, so perhaps high end stuff would be wasted on them in the first place. If we get 10 good years of use out of this, we'll be happy.

Takes longer to put together than we expected, budget all day for it. Also, save yourself a ton of trouble and buy an electric drill with a set of hex heads, you'll need them. You also need two people to put this together, it isn't a 1 person job. Don't have anything else in the room when you do it, lots of parts to put on the floor and figure out.

What do we like the most? The stairs, they are much safer in our opinion than ladders for the old style bunk beds. These double as drawers to boot with lots of storage in them. They are sturdy, I can walk up and down them without moving them an inch, they stay in one place, so that is good. What else? The under the bed drawers are nice, but very cheaply made. They don't attach to anything, so they roll free of the bed if you want, but they do have ok rollers on them. Good for storage of stuff you don't use every day, but I wouldn't want to make them the main attraction for holding clothes.

The whole thing is reversible, so you can have the stairs on either end, but really you can only do this once, because you have to drill into the wood on both ends to do it, so pick what side you want them on and live with it. Speaking of drilling, there are dozens of places you actually have to put screws into solid wood with no holes to start you off, you need a drill for this.

Final comments? Would we buy it again? Yes. So why 5 stars? Because it is worth considering for the price, if it was any more expensive it wouldn't be a good deal, but overall we're happy with it. If I could give it 4.5 stars I would have, but it really doesn't deserve 4 stars, it does what it should, and it does it well enough. The tipping point was the weight of the whole thing. Pain to lift and move, but nice that it doesn't shift when our 5 year old plays on it. It is solid and stays in place, and that, at the end of the day, makes it a 5 star item because safety is more important than anything else.

5great bunk, lots of storage!
By allisonmc
This is a great bed. Took a little time to put together, but it was worth it. Very sturdy. LOTS of storage. Great price. My son loves it! We would definitely recommend this to others. Stairway makes climbing in and out of the upper bunk very easy.
