A few complaints but still a great value
By Kyle
I paid $199 for this bunk bed and am happy with the purchase. Assembly was straight forward but a bit time consuming. Well over 100 screws.
Once assembled, the two beds are very sturdy, when stacked together, they are still very sturdy.
The beds do not come with full size bunk boards for the mattresses, but rather each has 13 slat boards string together as to be spaced evenly. The support is fine though for the mattresses. The only issue is that the slat boards aren't finished or sanded in any way. They look and feel like boards of wood you would buy at Home Depot or Lowes. When set up as a bunk bed, the person in the bottom bunk may get slivers from the slats of the top bunk if they like to fiddle with things. So far, my 2 year old son who sleeps in the bottom bunk hasn't had a sliver, but he is a bit more reserved than other boys his age.
Due to the height of the beds, no mattress thicker than 8 inches could safely fit in either bunk. Anything thicker and the rails of the top bunk would be useless. And for the bottom bunk, there would be very little space between the mattress and the top bunk.
The guard rails of the top bunk are solid, but if the occupant is a bit rambunctious, I would question the longevity of the rails. Once solid kick would likely end the usefulness of the rails. As long as the person sleeping in the top bunk isn't an out of control kid who destroys everything, it should be fine though.
The steps on the ladder are thick and solid. I appreciate that they are flat and not rounded like on other bunk bed ladders. My 5 year old son has no difficulty climbing up and down the ladder. The only possible issue may be the color. Since the color is dark, it may be difficult for young children to negotiate the steps in the dark of night.
I really only have two complaints. One is what I already mentioned about the unfinished slats for the mattress support. I just know that at some point someone will get a sliver, but hey, this is a rather minor concern -- every kid gets slivers throughout childhood.
My second complaint is that you can't choose where to position the ladder. You are stuck with placing the ladder on the right. With the angle of the ladder and since it sticks out a good 18 inches, due to the layout of my boys bedroom with where the window, closet, door, light switch, window, dresser, book shelves, chair, etc are all located, we had to do some rearranging of furniture. I wish there was an option of placing the ladder on the left side of the bed rather than the right.
Bottom line: the bed is safe, secure and worth the value. My boys love it.
******** UPDATE 2012-06-05 ************
My 2 boys have been using this bed for over a year and they are still loving the setup. No problem other than the fact that my youngest boy has had a sliver or two from the support boards. Everything is still holding together.
In fact, I'm going to be ordering a set for my 2 girls.

Lots of Pluses
By Scooter
Bought this for 2 boys - 6 and 4 years old.
Mine initially came in 1 box ... I knew it had to come in 2 boxes as I checked the local retailer's display. Quick phone call to Amazon did not resolve anything. I waited 2-3 days more ... and UPS finally delivered the box #2.
Pluses:
+ Compact packaging
+ Easy to understand directions
+ Tough sturdy real wood (although there is nothing wrong with engineered wood)
+ Up to 165 lbs (this means this bunk bed can accommodate my kids until they are 13-15, by then anyway, I need to split them up as 2 single twin beds)
+ Nice smooth (espresso) finish. Looks real expensive.
+ Excellent looking single twin beds (when separated)
+ Extra handrail supports. I have another bunk bed (from 2003) from a different manufacturer which did not have these.
+ Sturdy ladder with flat steps
Minuses:
- Some pieces (wood) were not labeled.
- The screw packs were not labeled.
- The position of the ladder cannot be moved around. You only have two options - without some modifications. If you are handy, you can change the ladder location - simply drill holes in appropriate locations.
- No extra large screws. I always want extras (for my other bunk bed).
- The support slats are not painted. But for this price, I cannot argue. There is a bunk bed at the local warehouse retailer which sells for $100 more --- the only difference I see are the painted slats.
- Wished it was made in America (mine was made in Vietnam).
Update:
- The clearance is low between the 2 beds. Our other bunk bed allowed me to sit upright. A child would be able to sit upright though.
It took me a total of 2-3 hours to put together. I did take my sweet time as I did not want to make any mistakes.
I cannot comment on the paint/finish as far as durability but I did accidentally bang up the posts - and I did not notice any scratches.

This bed stinks, literally
By John D. Hulsing
The construction of the bed is very good. The assembly was easy. All the parts were included and came in 2 boxes. With a cordless drill and a hex driver I was able to assemble it in about an hour.
Now the bad news, the smell the wood gives off is toxic. Really. I usually wouldn't care about this, believe me, and I recognize most brand-new furniture has an odor, but this was different. I normally would enjoy a "new-furniture" smell much like I enjoy new-car smell (who doesn't) but this odor was MUCH worse than expected. The smell filled the whole house. We first thought it was the matresses and placed them outside to air out. But upon further inspection, the matresses were fine, the odor was coming from the wood of the bedframes. Our 6-year-old complained of a headache and dizziness when she woke up so we knew we had to get rid of it*. We had this bed for 2 days total.
DISASSEMBLY only took about 1/2 hour! : ) and Amazon is, of course, great at returns.
*just so you know, my kid is not a complainer. If she says she doesn't feel well, she isn't well.
